Anne Clark Champions City Council Measure Invalidating Time Restrictions on Worker Claims

Anne Clark (’91), Partner at Vladeck, Raskin & Clark, P.C., was quoted by Gothamist endorsing a bill, passed April 11 by the New York City Council, that voids employment agreements shortening the statute of limitations on filing discrimination and harassment claims (“NYC Council Eyes Ban on Agreements Restricting Workplace Discrimination Claims,” Mar. 4). With certain job application or contract clauses restricting the claim filing period to six months, Anne noted that six months “is not a lot of time to find an attorney, have the attorney investigate, and prepare papers for filing. The most serious problem is not that it is hard to comply, but that most people do not recall signing such provisions.” At a Council hearing last year, Anne explained, “In essence, the employers are trying to write themselves out of the civil rights laws.” In an April 11 press release, bill sponsor Council Member Lincoln Restler commented, “Thank you to Speaker Adams for her strong support of this legislation and to attorney and constituent Anne Clark for bringing this issue to our office’s attention.”
