Blair Bowie (’17), director of Campaign Legal Center’s (CLC’s) Restore Your Vote Project, provided an update to CLC’s website discussing felony disenfranchisement laws, which take the right to vote away from those convicted of felony crimes (“It’s Time To Abolish Felony Disenfranchisement. Here’s Why,” June 28). “These laws proliferated during the Jim Crow era with the explicit and open purpose of preventing Black Americans from voting. Disenfranchisement laws still serve that purpose today, stripping Black citizens of the freedom to vote at more than three times the rate of the general population nationwide. It is time for America to live up to its promise of democracy for all. We can do that by passing laws that end felony disenfranchisement and guarantee every American has the freedom to vote.”
