Laurie Ball Cooper Denounces New DHS Immigration Rule Limiting Asylum Eligibility

Laurie Ball Cooper (’11), U.S. Legal Services Director at International Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP), was quoted by Al Jazeera discussing the new DHS/DOJ rule that disqualifies people entering the United States outside of lawful pathways from asylum eligibility and allows removal of those who do not establish a reasonable fear of persecution (“US Unveils Rule That Rights Groups Say Stifles Access to Asylum,” May 10). Laurie urged, “The Biden administration should be ashamed of pursuing Trump-era policies to unjustly deny protection to people seeking safety in the United States and return them to danger. The administration must immediately rescind this harmful and illegal rule.”
