Shakeer Rahman (’17), community lawyer and organizer with the Stop LAPD Spying Coalition and Los Angeles Community Action Network, was quoted in a Guardian article citing his organization’s report on “data-driven policing” and discussing the LAPD’s program targeting Nipsey Hussle’s Marathon Clothing store and community (“Revealed: How LAPD Targeted Nipsey Hussle’s Street Corner and Store,” Nov. 7). “LAPD was speculatively criminalizing the location. . . . Police are deployed to these locations, armed with what they’re told are these ‘data-driven trends’ … but those trends are just the racial profiling that police have always done.”
