Aaron Halegua Secures $5.9 Million in Damages on Behalf of Construction Workers in Saipan Human Trafficking Lawsuit

Aaron Halegua (’09) was quoted in the Saipan Tribune celebrating a victory as U.S. District Court for the NMI Chief Judge Ramona V. Manglona cited “egregious conditions” and awarded $5.91 million in compensatory and punitive damages to construction workers subjected to forced labor on the Imperial Pacific International Saipan casino project (“$5.9m Awarded to 7 Ex-IPI Workers,” May 26). “We are pleased to see that the court recognizes the egregiousness of IPI’s conduct and the severity of the suffering that it caused our clients. This is an important decision because eradicating forced labor requires that perpetrators of such abuses face serious consequences.”
