Nelson Mock (‘99), Attorney with Texas RioGrande Legal Aid and Lindsey Siegel (‘11), Attorney with Atlanta Legal Aid, were quoted in a New York Times article regarding their clients facing wrongful evictions and landlords with federally backed mortgages who violated the CARES Act moratorium with impunity (“Landlords Jump the Gun as Eviction Moratorium Wanes,” July 23, updated Sept. 2). As the CARES Act does not penalize landlords who violate the moratorium, Nelson noted that lawyers across Texas had seen “landlords trying to sidestep the issue.” With millions unemployed by pandemic, “[m]any Legal Aid clients are facing evictions simply because their unemployment benefits haven’t come through,” Lindsey said.
