Rebecca Vallas Examines Bureaucratic Disentitlement in Pandemic

Rebecca Vallas (‘09), Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress and host of Off-Kilter, penned an opinion for The Washington Post challenging the intentional use of bureaucracy to block access to benefits (“Republicans Wrapped the Safety Net in Red Tape. Now We’re All Suffering.” Apr. 15) which was also cited in a New Republic article (“Work Requirements Have Always Been about Punishment,” May 12) discussing the impact of program restrictions and requirements in weakening social safety nets in times of crisis. “While work requirements don’t address employment barriers or make jobs appear out of thin air, they are a highly effective tool for shrinking program enrollment.”
