Song Richardson Reflects on Enduring Injustices at the Heart of the Justice System as Judges Grapple with Their Part

Song Richardson ('93), Dean and Chancellor's Professor of Law at the University of California, Irvine School of Law, was quoted in a New York Times opinion piece regarding state supreme court justices' widespread public statements addressing the role of their own courts in perpetuating racial injustices in the criminal justice system they oversee ("We Are Part of the Problem They Protest," June 16). "Racism and anti-blackness have always operated and continue to operate under color of law. Part of the reason we're where we are today is that laws and judges have played their part in being the architects of oppression."
