Rethinking the Police: Derecka Purnell Seeks Abolishment Not Reform

Derecka Purnell ('17), movement lawyer, activist and US columnist for The Guardian, was cited in a recent New York Times opinion that discussed the history of policing, the effectiveness of past reform measures and the call to eliminate police ("Why Is Police Brutality Still Happening?" May 28). In Derecka's 2019 Times Op-Ed, "The Police Can't Solve the Problem. They Are the Problem." Sep. 26, she counseled, "Systems of oppression, like slavery, Jim Crow and mass incarceration, must be reduced and abolished — not reimagined."
