Three Fellows Advocate To Increase Accessibility of VA Treatment

Former Fellow Margaret Kuzma (’12), the director of the discharge upgrade practice at Connecticut Veterans Legal Center, wrote an op-ed in the Military Times proposing health care policy for the Department of Veterans Affairs and citing research produced by Former Fellows Pedro Spivakovsky-Gonzalez (’17) and Jessica Youngberg (’15) through their work with Veterans Legal Services and the Legal Services Center of Harvard Law School (“To Help Stem the Tide of Veteran Suicides, VA Must Stop Turning Away Patients,” March 5). “A system that requires an injured veteran to get the help of an attorney simply to access health care is not just shameful, it can be deadly,” Margaret stated. Allowing access does not require a legislative change; the VA simply needs to update its training and procedures to comply with the law.”
