Vivek Sankaran Promotes Compassion as Resource in Welfare System

Former Fellow Vivek Sankaran (’01), the director of the Child Advocacy Law Clinic and the Child Welfare Appellate Clinic at the University of Michigan Law School, wrote a column for The Chronicle of Social Change considering applications for research correlating legal and medical services providers’ compassion and empathy with significant reductions in recidivism and increases in compliance and healing (“‘Your Father Is as Worthless as Your Mother,’” Jan. 23). “Will we ever be able to engage families if we ... ignore their pain in our zeal to force them to comply with services?” Vivek wrote.
