Former Fellow Derecka Purnell (’17) co-authored an op-ed for The New York Times advocating that mass incarceration "must be reduced or abolished — not reimagined" (“The Police Can’t Solve the Problem. They Are the Problem,” Sept. 26). “Since [modern policing] originated with efforts to prevent labor organizing and to patrol slaves, [it] has punished the poor,” Derecka wrote. “No number of diversity workshops, body cameras and community policing initiatives will change that.”
