Danielle Lang Calls for End to Law ‘Charging’ Felons to Vote

Former Fellow Danielle Lang (’13) co-authored an op-ed for the Hartford Courant calling on Connecticut to overturn a provision that bars certain former felons from voting until they pay fines associated with their convictions (“Connecticut Must Stop Charging Ex-Offenders to Vote,” April 28). “These laws reflect a fundamental misunderstanding of criminal justice debts and the people who owe them,” Danielle wrote. “In the overwhelming majority of cases, living with outstanding fines and fees is not a reflection on an individual’s character but the consequence of a system that keeps formerly incarcerated people in poverty.”
