Chaumtoli Huq Talks About Bangladeshi Workers’ Protests

Former Fellow Chaumtoli Huq (‘99) discussed the obstacles to organizing for Bangladeshi workers in an article in Elle (“These Women Make Your Zara Jeans. Now, They’re Demanding to Be Paid Fairly,” Jan. 22). “Beyond the law, there are practical obstacles to organizing,” Chaumtoli said. “There is a police force that is formed to quell garment worker actions. [If] workers organize, employers retaliate. There are legal, socio-economic factors that prevent the formation of unions.”
