Aaron Halegua Discusses Labor Issues in China

Former Skadden Fellow Aaron Halegua ('09) of New York University spoke to The Economist for an article about new regulations in China's Guangdong province that codify the rights of workers to engage in collective bargaining through labor organizations affiliated with the state-controlled All-China Federation of Trade Unions (ACFTU) ("Out Brothers, Out!" Jan. 31). By taking on greater responsibility for handling disputes, the ACFTU is also taking on higher risk, Aaron said. According to the publication, he believes workers are likely to step up pressure on the official unions to represent them better; if they fail, workers could turn on the unions as well as factory bosses.
