The New York Times has published a letter to the editor written by former Skadden Fellow Mary Giliberti ('93) ("Mentally Ill Inmates," Feb. 15). Responding to a column by Nicholas Kristof about how jails have become mental hospitals, the letter said, "The deinstitutionalization of the mentally ill was supposed to be accompanied by the creation of a robust community mental health system. This never occurred. … The police, prosecutors and courts have an opportunity at the front door of the justice system to divert the mentally ill, if only there were a community mental health system ready to support them. The Affordable Care Act offers an opportunity to correct this failure."
