Julie Su (’94), Acting U.S. Secretary of Labor, was quoted in a Washington Post article detailing the behind-the-scenes negotiations that helped end the recent port strike of 45,000 dockworkers represented by the International Longshoreman’s Association (“How Biden Helped End a Port Strike That Threatened Democrats in November,” Oct. 4). Negotiating with Harold Daggett, a third-generation longshoreman leading the dockworkers, and representatives of the global shipping lines, Julie leaned in to “the relationships she formed last summer in tense contract negotiations with the West Coast ports and longshoremen.” Speaking with both sides into the wee hours, Julie noted, “Daggett is a man who will fight for his members. This is a job that has provided a decent, honest living for generations…and that story resonates with me.”
