Steve Tobocman (’97), Executive Director of Global Detroit, coauthored an opinion in The Detroit News, calling on progressives to counter former President Trump’s “assertion that immigrants steal jobs from Black workers” (“Black America Won’t Rise through Punching Down Immigrants,” Aug. 8). Citing research from his non-profit, Global Detroit, Steve argued that Trump’s rhetoric is untrue and has found that “vacancy, blight, crime and other indices of neighborhood deterioration were largely reversed when immigrants moved in,” and that “Black residents in these neighborhoods reported more optimism and satisfaction in their neighborhoods than residents in similar neighborhoods without immigration.”
