Rebecca Vallas Calls for Clearing Pathways to Employment by Assigning Criminal Records Holders a Clean Slate

Rebecca Vallas (‘09), Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress and host of Off-Kilter, co-authored an article for InsideSources discussing the difficulties workers with criminal records faced prior to pandemic, including the highest unemployment rate as a group, and the necessity of automating record-clearing to secure long-term access to employment (“A Clean Slate in the Age of Coronavirus,” May 20). “[L]onger-term, we must also ensure that the stigma of a record doesn’t block tens of millions of justice-impacted people and families from taking part in the recovery. … The consequences of leaving people with records and their families behind amid COVID-19 cannot be overstated.”
