Patricia Okonta Challenges Dreadlock Ban

Fellow Patricia Okonta (‘18) helped file an administrative complaint on behalf of a 6-year-old boy who was banned from school for wearing his hair in dreadlocks. The complaint was covered by Yahoo! Lifestyle (“Dad Takes Legal Action Against School That Banned Son’s Dreadlocks,” Nov. 30). “We know that ‘locs’ are related to black culture and black identities, and policies that prohibit these types of hairstyles are often proxies for discrimination,” Patricia said.
