Former Fellow Alesdair Ittelson (’12) was quoted in a New York Times article about New York City’s decision to offer gender-neutral birth certificates (“New York City’s Male, Female or ‘X’: The Push for a Third Choice on Official Forms,” Sept. 27). Alesdair said that because nonbinary options are not yet widely protected or recognized, putting an “X” on children’s birth certificates, as now allowed in New York City, can potentially stigmatize them without their consent.
