Shira Wakschlag Outlines Opposition to Doctor-Assisted Suicide

Former Skadden fellow Shira Wakschlag ('10) of The Arc appeared on Maryland Public Television's "State Circle" to discuss physician-assisted suicide ("Death With Dignity," Oct. 9). "Both Arc and many members of the disability rights community are strongly opposed to physician-assisted suicide legislation," Shira said, providing three reasons: discrimination in the medical profession against those with disabilities; the potential for abuse, both among doctors and caregivers; and the concern of a profit-driven health care system that could incentivize choosing the cheapest option of physician-assisted suicide over preventive treatments that are more expensive.
