Jean Callahan Examines Guardianship Cases Amid Potential Abuses

Former Skadden Fellow Jean Callahan ('94), the director of the Brookdale Center on Healthy Aging at Hunter College, was quoted in a front-page New York Times article examining whether nursing homes are abusing the law by petitioning for guardianship of residents as a means of bill collection ("To Collect Debts, Nursing Homes Are Seizing Control Over Patients," Jan. 25). The Brookdale Center is conducting a study of guardianship cases, which in New York are meant to be brought "only by someone with the person's welfare at heart." Instead, Jean said, "it has become a system that's very focused on finances."
