Nicole Ochi Assists Retired Asian American Tenants

Former Skadden Fellow and Flom Incubator Grant recipient Nicole Ochi (’10), a senior staff attorney at Asian Americans Advancing Justice – LA, was quoted in a Los Angeles Times article describing how she helped a group of retired Asian Americans regain discounted rent rates at a former government-assisted apartment complex now converted to a privately owned facility (“For These Residents, Help With Sudden Rent Hike is a Much-Needed Gift,” December 8). Nicole convinced the owners of the complex to apply for a U.S. Housing and Urban Development Department’s low-vacancy rate voucher. “Advocates persuaded Miracle Terrace’s owners to apply for the vouchers, though rents remained elevated during the five months it took for the vouchers to come through,” Nicole said. When the vouchers came through last month, rents were rolled back and the tenants were given retroactive discounts for the months when they paid higher rents.
