Jeree Thomas Calls for Solution to Racial Disparity in School Arrests

Former Skadden Fellow Jeree Thomas (’11) of Legal Aid Justice Center’s JustChildren Program in Richmond, Virginia, was quoted in a Richmond Times-Dispatch article about racial disparity in school-based arrests in Henrico County (“School Data Show Racial Disparity in Henrico,” Sept. 28). "The fact that African-American youth were about 37 percent of the students in Henrico public schools last year, but made up approximately 80 percent of the individuals arrested at school, is deeply troubling," Jeree said. She called for a collaborative solution that involves county law enforcement and schools, and pointed to the upcoming proposal to revise the schools' code of conduct as an area to be examined.
