Former Skadden Fellow Lisa Heinzerling ('89) was quoted in a New York Times article about a calculation in new federal tobacco regulations that the benefits from reducing smoking "have to be discounted by 70 percent to offset the loss in pleasure that smokers suffer when they give up their habit" ("In New Calculus on Smoking, It's Health Gained vs. Pleasure Lost," Aug. 6). In addition to jeopardizing the FDA's ability to take strong actions against tobacco, this approach could have broader implications for food and beverage regulations. "If this is a beachhead into this kind of analysis, that should be setting off alarms," said Lisa.
