Former Skadden Fellow Nisha Agarwal ('06) has been appointed by New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio as commissioner of the Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs. Nisha is charged with seeing through the administration's immigration agenda, including establishing a municipal ID for undocumented immigrants, improving outreach to immigrant-owned businesses and ensuring that victims of crimes in immigrant communities are fully protected and respected. Nisha also was quoted in a New York Times article describing the economic disparities of some Asian families in Queens caused in part by the recession, and the administration's plans to help in that regard ("In a Flourishing Queens, Prosperity Eludes Some Asian Families," May 4). Nisha said, "Efforts already underway will also help, including improving translation services to ensure better access to city services and benefits, and working to raise the minimum wage."
