Risa Kaufman Comments on US Justice Gap

Former Skadden Fellow Risa Kaufman ('98), executive director of the Human Rights Institute at Columbia Law School, wrote on op-ed for The National Law Journal on the United Nations' review of how the U.S. is addressing its widening civil justice gap ("US Justice Gap Is Under International Scrutiny," March 3). According to Risa, fewer than one in five legal problems experienced by low-income individuals are addressed with legal assistance. Risa said that, in addition to adopting reforms at the federal and state levels, the U.S. must increase funding for the Legal Services Corp., the primary federal program that provides civil legal aid for the poor.
