Sandra Park Named ‘Lawyer of the Week’

Former Skadden Fellow Sandra Park (’03) was profiled as The Times of London’s “Lawyer of the Week” in an article highlighting her work representing 20 organizations and individuals who challenged human gene patents in the case before the Supreme Court (July 11). In describing the case’s main challenges, Sandra said, “We went against 25 years of US Patent Office approval of human gene patents and a Patent Bar that believed products of nature could be patented. It was crucial to bring together patients, geneticists, and many others to show the harmful impact of gene patents on people’s lives and scientific advancement. The court’s decision means that gene patents will no longer stand in the way of a patient who needs access to genetic testing, or a researcher who studies the genome to create better healthcare options.” Sandra is a staff attorney with the ACLU Women’s Rights Project.
