Nina Perales Praises Decision Striking Down Voter Registration Law

Former Skadden Fellow Nina Perales (’90) was quoted by numerous media outlets in articles about the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision striking down an Arizona law requiring people registering to vote to show proof of citizenship. The Washington Post quoted Nina as saying, “Today’s decision sends a strong message that states cannot block their citizens from registering to vote by superimposing burdensome paperwork requirements on top of federal law. ... The Supreme Court has affirmed that all U.S. citizens have the right to register to vote using the national postcard, regardless of the state in which they live” (“Supreme Court Says States May Not Add Citizenship Proof for Voter Registration,” June 17). Nina serves as vice president of litigation for the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund.
