Shakti Belway Prompts School Segregation Investigation

Former Skadden Fellow Shakti Belway (’05) was quoted in a Wall Street Journal article about ongoing government efforts to force Cleveland, Miss., to “fully dismantle its racially identifiable one-race schools” (“In Mississippi, a Gray Area Between Black and White,” March 15). During a 2005 visit to Cleveland, Shakti said, “some of the elderly community members mentioned these deseg orders,” which had been put in place during the last several decades to disestablish all school segregation. Shakti alerted the Justice Department, which concluded in 2009 that “the District has failed to fully dismantle the prior dual school system and violated the specific terms of the court orders that govern this case.”
