Scott Colom Appeals Student’s Suspension Over Rap Song

Former Skadden Fellow Scott Colom (’09) was quoted in an Associated Press article regarding his representation of Mississippi student Taylor Bell, who was suspended for recording a rap song in which he accused two coaches of misconduct toward female students (“Miss. Student Challenges Suspension Over Rap Song,” Dec. 4). Scott is appealing the district court ruling that upheld the school board’s suspension. “Mr. Bell has a First Amendment right to speak off campus,” Scott said. “The vast majority of the song was about wrongdoing at the school. In my opinion, it would be dangerous to stop students from exposing wrongdoing by school officials.
