BUILD Program Helps At-Risk Kids

BUILD, an organization founded 13 years ago in East Palo Alto by former Skadden Fellow Suzanne McKechnie Klahr (’99), was featured in San Francisco Business Times (“BUILD Uses Entrepreneurship to Teach Life Skills,” Oct. 19-25). BUILD offers a four-year program that targets disengaged high school students in low-income communities and uses entrepreneurship to motivate these students to excel in school and go to college. Since its founding, the program has expanded into 20 schools in the Bay Area, Boston and Washington, D.C. The article lauded BUILD’s “impressive bottomline results”: every one of the program’s nearly 1,000 graduates has been accepted into college. “Entrepreneurship is a powerful way to engage kids,” Suzanne told the publication.
