Julie Su Discusses Distribution Center Subcontracting

California Labor Commissioner and former Skadden Fellow Julie Su (’94) was quoted in a New York Times article about the growing number of distribution warehouses in California’s Moreno Valley (“As California Warehouses Grow, Labor Issues Are a Concern,” July 22). Though some see the warehouses as a source of much-needed jobs, others are skeptical. Julie said she has heard numerous complaints about the industry, but investigations were often hindered because many of the warehouses use staffing agencies, which classify workers as temporary, even when they have worked in the same building for years. “There seems to be an unfortunate model of subcontracting used to cut costs and really depress the working conditions,” Julie said. “It really reflects the economy moving to this kind of day-labor system in a way that really can destabilize the economy.”
